CERES -- Riding in the bright red cab to school Thursday, Jennifer Martinez and Elena Zarate couldn't stop grinning. Lights flashing, siren sounding — nothing beats a fire engine entrance.
Jennifer, a sixth-grader, walked into her class at Walter White Elementary in Ceres with more than a priceless memory. She and Elena, a fifth-grader, also got a backpack full of books, school supplies and Modesto Nuts baseball tickets, courtesy of the Ceres Fire Department.
Both said the ride was very cool, especially the headphones they used to listen to the firefighters. Both said they read 10 books in two weeks to earn the honor.
